Elena (Eliza Eves) is turning the living room upside down hunting for her missing phone. In walks her stepdad Nate (Ryan Driller), holding the runaway device and telling her she left it in the kitchen. She grabs it, eager for a message, but her face falls — no new texts. Her boyfriend has gone quiet for two whole days, and of all days, it's Valentine's. She's crushed, wondering what she did wrong. Nate offers a warm smile and a 'Chin up, Buttercup.' His wife's been too busy for him lately, he admits, so why not spend Valentine's together, just the two of them? Elena thinks that sounds sweet, and Nate promises to make the day extra special. They settle in for a romantic movie — the very thing she'd planned with her boyfriend. But the film only tugs at her heart, reminding her of the love she thought she had. Nate seizes the moment, his 'comforting' touches lingering a little too long. Then he surprises her with a box of chocolates, watching a bit too closely as she licks her lips after each sweet bite.
