Kendra Spade grills Jake Adams, the census taker

The scene opens on 18-year-old Beth Coleman dashing to the door, calling out 'coming!' as the bell rings a second time. She swings it open to find a meek man in glasses and a nerdy suit, a leather messenger bag tucked under his arm. He nervously introduces himself as Milton James — a census taker. Her parents never filled out the latest census, so by law he's here in person to interview someone from the household. Beth looks wary; her folks are gone for the day and she knows nothing about this census business. No problem, Milton says, anyone over 15 can answer. He looks her up and down — she is over 15, right? Beth says yes, she just turned 18 a couple of months ago. Milton adjusts his glasses and says perfect, then he can interview her instead, only fifteen minutes or so. Beth still isn't sold. Now's really not a good time and she'd rather he come back when her parents are home. She apologizes and tries to shut the door, but it won't close — Milton has wedged his shoe between the door and the frame. 'I'm afraid I must insist,' he says, going for menacing and landing on flustered. 'Answering the census is required by law. Put simply, Miss Coleman, you don't really have a choice.' Cut to the title plate. Moments later, Milton has let himself in and slipped off his shoes. The two step into a big cozy living room with wood paneling — clearly the Colemans aren't hurting for cash. 'Want a glass of water?' Beth offers, polite despite her nerves. Not right now, thanks, Milton says, trying to sound warmer than he did at the door and mostly coming off awkward. He waits for Beth to pick her seat, then settles in beside her. Kendra Spade plays the reluctant young hostess to a tee, while Jake Adams turns his clipboard-clutching census man into the neighborhood's nosiest visitor. This one counts every detail and knocks door to door — proof that some surveys get very hands-on. Watch how Milton's fifteen-minute questionnaire turns into something far more thorough.
